If you’re smoking indoors, PLEASE STOP! Here’s why,

Posted by Gurseet Singh on

Every smoker will agree that sometimes it’s really difficult to control the urge of having a smoke, no matter where you are. More often, one gets that urge when they’re indoors. You might take all the precautions you can think of but none of them is enough.

The fact is, there’s no excuse for smoking indoors, it’ll inevitably be bad for a multitude of reasons. Let’s understand what they are.

Ever heard of second-hand smoking?

It’s the smoke that smokers breathe out along with the floating smoke from the end of a cigarette, cigar or pipe. This floating smoke settles on various surfaces indoors throughout the house.

This when inhaled by children can lead to multiple serious illnesses & infections such as ear infections, bronchitis, pneumonia, and even serious conditions like Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or SIDS. The settled smoke can either be inhaled or ingested through licking or eating food or other items.

The other ill effects of second-hand smoke exposure for adults as well as children include:

  • Lung Infections
  • Asthma
  • Sore Throat
  • Cancer
  • Heart Diseases

One might say that they’re taking enough precautions like, keeping a window open or turning on the exhaust fan for ventilation, using an air conditioner, spraying room fresheners and such. However, although on the surface these seem like tactical solutions, in reality, none of them completely eliminate second-hand smoking exposure. If you can’t have control over your urges, it is essential to maintain a smoke-free environment indoors for the sake of your co-habitants.

What can you do to lessen or eliminate second-hand smoke exposure?

First and foremost, STOP smoking indoors. Please your urges outside & not in the vicinity of children, pregnant women & elders.

If you’re a regular smoker, have a dedicated space outdoors for smoking & ensure it's inaccessible to children.

In case you have guests over, request them not to smoke indoors & show them to your dedicated smoking space.

One can always put a sign to remind themselves that this is a smoke-free zone!
